CHELONIAN AND AMPHIBIANS

Overview: Vietnam has recorded 26 species of tortoises and freshwater turtles, and 5 species of sea turtles. In which, two species are expected to be distributed in Vietnam and one species is considered to be extinct in Vietnam. Total of 34 species and subspecies, 31/34 species are listed in IUCN Red list: 9 CR, 12 EN, 10 VU, 1 NT, 2 NE.

The distribution of Chelonian:

  • Northern and Central Vietnam: These areas have the similar in structure of mountainous terrain so then recorded the diversity and distribution of Chelonian.
  • Southern Vietnam: The typical flat terrain of the delta leads to the difference in the distribution of turtle species.
  • Value: Having aesthetic values that support the student to implement research on habitat of these species in nature.

    Status: Decreasing population in the wild.

    Threats:  Habitat destruction, illegal hunting, trafficking, and use for traditional medicines.

    What CCD is doing: CCD is in collaboration with Xuan Lien Nature Reserve and other stakeholders to implement field surveys to evaluate the diversity, population and distribution of tortoises and freshwater turtles in Xuan Lien.
